NOW NIGERIANS CAN TALK TO THEIR GOVERNMENT FROM AN APP

Sometimes going to a government office in the middle of the day can be a bit of a cumbersome process. If you are in Lagos, the sun has probably reached its peak and buildings have become uncomfortably warm as you join the queue of people also seeking some service. However, having to physically visit a government office, in Lagos, may soon become a thing of the past. A mobile app known as “Citizens Gate”has been launched in Lagos by the state government that will allow citizens to access public services from their mobile phones.

The aim of the Citizens Gate app is to expedite the provision of services and promote communication between citizens and the government from the comfort of their phones. The app is said to have 6 segments: file a feedback, LASRRA registration, department and agencies, online payment for state services, Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs), and Local Governments (source: olisa). At the top right corner of the app, users can login into their accounts. The section, “file a feedback”, allows users to both register and give feedback.
The advantages of the development of this app is not only felt by citizens, but it also helps the government as well. Firstly, the app is able to collect data that is vital to state operations: as users register to use the app, it also helps to build the state’s database and makes planning a bit more efficient and more and more Nigerian residents download and use the app.

This is quite a novel idea in the context of West Africa. It is commendable in that it should hopefully aid in bridging the power gap between the Nigerian government and Nigeria’s people, especially in a time when this gap seems to be increasing. The app is also easy to use and will make it possible for citizens to express their needs and opinions in real time. This will make it easier to manage majority problems.

The app is only in its earlier stages however and there is still some room for improvement. For example, navigation on the app is currently not at its optimum. The inclusion of navigation keys would make this a bit better. Also, it would be convenient if registering was made separate from the “file a feedback” section and  a “register” button was was on the main page of the app, new users would be able to register without difficulty. As the app undergoes improvements, we are hopeful for its future. This innovative app could really change up the game in Nigeria.

Sliide Airtime named Most Innovative Mobile App at Global Mobile World awards

Sliide Airtime has been named as the World’s Most Innovative App at the Global Mobile World awards, dubbed the ‘Oscars’ of the global telecom industry.

Beating strong competition from big-name (and big budget) apps from around the world,  this award comes as Sliide prepares to launch the service into its second and third markets of South Africa and Pakistan - cementing its position as the most innovative, effective and useful app available today.

Sliide Airtime was designed to solve a real-life problem for hundreds of millions of people living in Africa and other emerging markets; data is expensive relative to incomes.
The 2017 Affordability Report published earlier this month by the Alliance for Affordable Internet (A4AI) writes that: “Over 4 billion people are still offline today — most of them women, most in developing countries, and most because they cannot afford to connect”. The report says that to buy just 1GB of data in Africa costs an average citizen nearly 18% of their monthly income.
Sliide provides users with an easy way to earn free airtime – and discover new content. It sends personalised news and stories from national and international publishers as well as sponsored content and adverts straight to the lock screen of phones. Sliide uses 65% of its advertising revenues to buy mobile data from MNOs to give to its users – who can then earn more airtime by completing tasks such as answering surveys from brands.

Following its launch in Nigeria in March 2016, Sliide made an immediate impact, with every single one of its users continuing to receive free airtime every month. Advertisers including Unilever use Sliide because it gives them a now-proven mobile advertising channel.

Corbyn Munnik, CEO and founder of Sliide Airtime, said: “What an honour for myself and the Sliide team. This is proof yet again that Africa can produce innovative companies that can change the world.  We are now raising funds to expand into additional markets; there’s a lot more to achieve as we continue to expand and scale up our offering.”

Sliide’s competitors are Unlockd and Buzzvil. Unlockd is live in Australia, the US and UK and backed by a number of high profile investors in Australia including Lachlan Murdoch. Buzzvil is headquartered in Korea and has users there as well as in Japan, Taiwan and the US.

However, Sliide was designed specifically for emerging markets taking into consideration the large barriers to app usage including: poor internet connectivity; older, smaller and slower devices and a user-base who are less accustomed to using apps in their everyday life.

Last year at the AppsAfrica Innovation awards held during AfricaCom in Cape Town, Sliide Airtime won the prestigious title of Best African App, beating competition from more than 200 submissions from 25 countries.
It was also named as the Most Effective Consumer Smartphone App at the Effective Mobile Marketing Awards in London, “Mobile Marketing Company of the Year” at the annual Nigerian Telecom Awards and winner of the Game-Changing Innovation category at the West Africa Com Awards.
The Sliide Airtime Android app can be downloaded from the Google Play Store or directly from
